Richard W. Bailey was born October 26, 1939 in Pontiac, Michigan. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 1965. He was appointed assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan in 1965. He became associate professor in 1971 and full professor in 1976. St. Clare's began as a mission of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in 1953. Holding their first services at the old Stone School, the membership steadily grew necessitating the building of their own sanctuary completed in the winter of 1956. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
